FBI Warns of Phone Scam

The FBI is warning the public about a phone scam that is targeting individuals while displaying the FBI’s telephone number on the recipient’s caller ID.

The FBI has received multiple calls about someone claiming to represent the U.S. government or even to be an FBI agent, according to a news release issued by the FBI Springfield office.

The caller demands immediate payment of such debts as delinquent student loans, delinquent taxes or overdue parking tickets and may threaten the call recipient with arrest, the FBI said. The caller also may try to get personal information.

The telephone number appearing on a caller ID display may be that of an FBI field office, but the FBI does not call people for money, the agency said.

Call recipients should never give out personal information to callers they don’t know. They also can file a complaint through the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at www.IC3.gov.
